Pestrol Solar Panel Guard Kit – 10m
Protect Solar Panels from Birds, Rodents, Nesting & Debris
The Pestrol Solar Panel Guard Kit – 10m provides a practical physical barrier around the perimeter of roof-mounted solar panels, helping prevent birds, rats, mice and other unwanted animals from gaining access underneath the array.
The space beneath solar panels can provide a sheltered location for birds and rodents to nest. Over time, nesting material, droppings, leaves and other debris can accumulate beneath the panels, while rodents may also damage exposed wiring by chewing it.
The Pestrol Solar Panel Guard Kit uses a 21cm-wide galvanised and UV PVC-coated welded wire mesh to close this gap while still allowing airflow around the solar panels.
Importantly, the system attaches to the solar panel frame using purpose-designed clips, avoiding the need to drill into the panels. The latest kit also features a smaller locking nut for a more discreet finished installation.
The 10m kit includes 35 commercial-grade fasteners and is ideal for smaller residential solar arrays or installations requiring up to approximately 10 metres of perimeter protection.

Why Do Solar Panels Need Pest Protection?
The gap between a solar panel and the roof creates an attractive sheltered space.
For birds, it can provide protection from weather and predators, making it a potential nesting and roosting location.
Rodents can also enter beneath solar arrays, where exposed cables and electrical components may be vulnerable to gnawing.
Once pests begin using the area, you may experience:
- Bird nests beneath panels
- Accumulation of droppings
- Feathers and nesting material
- Rats or mice sheltering beneath the array
- Chewed or damaged wiring
- Leaves and twigs becoming trapped
- Debris accumulating against the roof
- Restricted airflow around the installation
Installing a physical mesh barrier helps prevent access before animals can establish themselves underneath the panels.
How Does the Solar Panel Guard Work?
The concept is simple: close the gap without enclosing the entire solar panel system.
The 21cm-wide mesh is installed vertically around the exposed outside perimeter of the solar array.
The upper section is secured to the solar-panel frame using the supplied fasteners, while the lower section of mesh is shaped against the roof.
This creates a continuous physical barrier between the edge of the panel and roof surface.
Birds and rodents are prevented from simply walking or climbing underneath the panels, while the open wire-mesh construction still allows ventilation around the solar array.
Helps Protect Solar Wiring from Rodents
Rodents have continuously growing teeth and regularly gnaw materials in their environment.
If rats or mice establish themselves beneath solar panels, accessible wiring can potentially become a target.
Damage to cables may lead to:
- Electrical faults
- Reduced system performance
- Expensive repairs
- Increased maintenance requirements
The Solar Panel Guard doesn’t rely on repelling rodents after they arrive. Instead, it provides physical exclusion, helping prevent them from reaching the protected area in the first place.
Helps Stop Birds Nesting Under Solar Panels
Solar arrays can be particularly attractive to birds because they provide an elevated, sheltered space.
Once birds begin nesting beneath panels, the problem can become ongoing.
Nesting birds can introduce:
- Twigs
- Grass
- Feathers
- Droppings
- Food remains
- Other nesting debris
By closing the perimeter gap, the mesh makes it much more difficult for birds to establish nests beneath the solar array.
Keeps Leaves & Debris Out
Animals aren’t the only reason to protect the gap beneath your panels.
Wind can push leaves, twigs and other debris underneath an unprotected solar array.
The mesh provides a barrier that helps reduce larger debris entering and accumulating underneath the panels while its open construction allows air to continue circulating.
21cm-Wide Flexible Mesh
The supplied mesh is approximately 21cm wide.
Rather than requiring the panel and roof to be perfectly parallel, the lower section can be allowed to flare and curve against the roof profile.
This helps create a more complete barrier between the solar-panel frame and roof.
During installation, avoid leaving openings where persistent birds or rodents could squeeze through.
No Drilling Into Your Solar Panels
One of the most important features of the system is the fastening method.
The supplied clips attach to the solar-panel frame, allowing the mesh to be secured without drilling holes into the panel.
This avoids unnecessary permanent modification to the solar panels.
Because solar-panel systems and manufacturer warranty conditions vary, installers should still check the requirements of their particular solar-panel manufacturer before fitting any aftermarket accessory.
Smaller, More Discreet Locking Nut
The latest Solar Panel Guard Kit features a smaller locking nut.
Once the mesh is installed, this creates a less prominent fastening point and helps produce a tidier finished appearance around the solar-panel perimeter.
What’s Included?
The 10m Pestrol Solar Panel Guard Kit contains:
- 1 × 10m roll of galvanised and UV PVC-coated welded wire mesh
- 21cm mesh width
- 35 × commercial-grade fasteners
Tools Required
For installation you will generally need:
- Protective gloves
- Metal snips
- Pliers
- Suitable cable ties for joins and corners
How to Install the Solar Panel Guard
1. Plan the Installation
- Measure the exposed perimeter of the solar array to determine how much mesh will be required.
- The 10m kit provides approximately 10 metres of mesh. Remember to allow additional material for overlapping joins and forming corners.
2. Install the Fasteners
- Position the supplied clips approximately every 30–40cm along the underside of the solar-panel frame.
- Make sure each fastener is securely positioned before fitting the mesh.
3. Cut the Mesh Into Manageable Sections
- Rather than attempting to handle the entire 10m roll on the roof, cut the mesh into approximately 2m sections where practical.
- This can make positioning and shaping the mesh considerably easier.
- Always wear suitable gloves when handling cut wire mesh.
4. Position the Mesh
- Place the mesh around the outside perimeter of the solar panels.
- Position the fastening rod upwards so the fastening system applies downward pressure to the mesh.
- Allow the bottom of the mesh to flare outward and follow the roof surface.
- This is important because the objective is to close the entire accessible gap rather than leaving an opening at roof level.
5. Secure the Locking Washer
- Fit the supplied fastening washer and push it firmly into position to hold the mesh securely against the solar-panel frame.
- Check that the mesh remains firmly positioned against the roof.
6. Join Mesh Sections
- Where two sections meet, overlap the mesh by approximately 10cm.
- Secure the overlapping sections together using suitable cable ties.
- A proper overlap helps prevent gaps forming between sections.
7. Form Outer Corners
At an outside corner:
- Cut upwards through the mesh from the bottom towards the bend point.
- Shape the mesh around the corner.
- If a gap remains, cut an additional piece of mesh to cover it.
- Secure the additional section using cable ties.
8. Form Inner Corners
For an inside corner:
- Cut upwards from the bottom of the mesh to the required bend point.
- Shape the mesh around the corner.
- Overlap the sections where necessary.
- Secure overlapping mesh using cable ties.
9. Inspect the Complete Perimeter
Once installation is complete, inspect the entire solar array.
Look carefully for:
- Gaps at corners
- Loose fasteners
- Poorly joined sections
- Openings against the roof
- Mesh that is not firmly secured
- Areas animals could potentially push through
The aim is to create a continuous barrier around every accessible side of the solar array.
How Many Fasteners Should I Use?
The 10m kit contains 35 fasteners.
The supplied installation guidance recommends positioning clips approximately every 30–40cm.
Extra attention may be required around corners, joins and irregular areas.
10m or 30m Kit?
The Pestrol Solar Panel Guard Kit is available in two sizes.
10m Kit
Includes:
- 10m mesh roll
- 21cm mesh width
- 35 fasteners
Best suited to smaller solar arrays or installations requiring less perimeter coverage.
30m Kit
